Dear Nicolette,
Thank you for your article; for your honesty, poignancy and passion. I am a final year university student in the West Indies and I waited with great anticipation to read the objective views on the recent electoral process.

In all honesty I was glad that I missed another opportunity to vote , not because I am nonchalant about the ability to exercise my right to vote but because nothing seemed any different with the politics practiced today than that practised almost thrity years ago. I was disappointed in the fact that we haven't shown true democractic growth on a representational level in terms of politicians and on a civilian level where we as a people demand a higher standard of our leaders.

It was another opportunity for me as a member of the electorate to think deeply about what certain concepts mean to me: democracy, fairness, national and cultural identity, humaneness.

I appreciate your conscientious deliverary on the real issues and be encouraged to do so as you lead many young individuals like myself to a proper understanding of our society.

Cheers!

One very positive thing with respect to the last election is that we have seen our first one term government since independence.

I am not very happy to see Mr. Ingraham back in as I felt his two term promise on the FNM's first shot at government was a good thing and what we have now is a step back, but it is good to see a one term government none the less.

Now, if the current government does not do an excellent job, they can go out after one term as well.

Going to some of the meat of the article:

It will not be a good thing if the two parties just accustom themselves to swapping out every five years.

I would like to see us talk about instant runoff voting more.

First link I found with a google search:

This may give us a shot at real opposition from a decent number of parties and independants as well.

The way we are running foreign investments and land ownership in particular is not good.

We do not need to be fostering foreign colonies in our country.

I welcome foreigners amoung us. They can be a great asset to our country. Foreigners foreigners on the high end economically, and those in between, but we need to find a way to integrate into our neighbourhoods and society in general.

We need to see some progress towards real viable local government. (For New Providence as well.)

Local government that can set and collect its own taxes of some sort to give it a measure of autonomy from the national government.

This could provide a good form of training for those wanting to run for national office.

All of this is off the cuff and not too well thought out for consistency. I hope it may foster profitable discussion.

all the best,

drew

Thanks to both of you.

Drew, I agree. We need to work on issues of process. I would like to see a system of public debates between candidates put into place, so that constituents get to see what their candidates stand for, and also so that the country can get to see what the parties stand for, or if, indeed, there is any difference.

It also means that candidates need to be more than simply loyal party supporters or dolers out of favours. Not that that last will ever go away, no matter who gets in; but we have to make it more difficult to do.
